# How do AI agents handle permissions and access control?

Well-designed AI agents act with the permissions of the person they are working for, so they only retrieve data and take actions that user is allowed to. Permissions should be enforced at the data layer, the agent should have its own scoped identity for auditing, sensitive actions should need approval, and every access and action should be logged.

## Permission models compared

| Model | Risk |
|---|---|
| Agent uses a broad service account | Can expose data the user shouldn't see |
| Agent filters results after retrieval | Leaks possible through summaries |
| Permissions enforced at data layer per user | Lowest risk |

## Key controls

1. **User-scoped access** for retrieval and actions.
2. **Synced permissions** from source systems, kept current.
3. **Agent identity** (non-human identity) with least privilege.
4. **Approval gates** for refunds, access grants, external messages.
5. **Audit trail** of queries, data touched and actions.
6. **Role-based access** for who can build and change agents.

## Example

A sales rep asks the agent about a customer. The agent can see that customer's tickets and CRM record but not HR files or board documents, because those permissions carry over from source systems.

## FAQ

### Can AI agents bypass permissions?

They can if they use broad service accounts. Enterprise platforms enforce the requesting user's permissions to prevent this.

### What is a non-human identity?

An identity for software such as an AI agent or service, with its own credentials and permissions, distinct from human users.

### Which AI support agents support role-based access control?

Check whether the vendor enforces source-system permissions per user, supports RBAC for admins and builders, and logs access.
