# How does enterprise search work?

Enterprise search works by connecting to company apps through connectors, indexing or syncing their content along with each item's access permissions, interpreting a user's query by meaning rather than just keywords, ranking results by relevance and context, and, in AI search, generating a direct answer with citations that only uses information the user is allowed to see.

## The five stages

| Stage | What happens |

Periodic indexing can leave results hours or days stale. Continuous two-way sync keeps answers current and allows actions back into source systems.

## Documents vs records

Many tools only search documents. Searching structured records such as tickets, accounts and backlog items, and how they connect, gives better answers to questions like "which customers are affected by this bug?"
