# How does MCP connect AI agents to business tools?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) connects AI agents to business tools through a standard client-server interface. Each tool or data source runs an MCP server that describes the actions and data it offers; the AI application acts as an MCP client that discovers those capabilities and calls them, so one agent can use many systems without custom integrations.

## How it works

1. **MCP server**: wraps a system such as a CRM, ticketing tool or database and exposes tools (actions), resources (data) and prompts.
2. **MCP client**: lives in the AI application and connects to one or more servers.
3. **Discovery**: the client asks each server what it offers.
4. **Use**: the model decides to call a tool; the client sends the request; the server performs it with the credentials it has been given and returns the result.

## MCP vs other approaches

| Approach | Strength | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Custom API integration | Full control | Built per tool and per app |
| MCP | Standard, reusable connectors | Each call is live; no built-in view of how data across tools relates |
| Synced knowledge graph | Fast, connected, cross-tool context | Requires a sync layer |

## Security considerations

MCP servers can take real actions, so scope credentials tightly, require approval for sensitive tools, watch for prompt injection in tool outputs, and log every call. Enterprises often combine MCP for actions with a permission-aware memory layer for context.

## FAQ

### Who created MCP?

Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol as an open standard in November 2024, and it has since been adopted across many AI tools.

### Is MCP the same as an API?

No. MCP is a standard way for AI applications to discover and use APIs and data. MCP servers usually call the underlying APIs.

### Do AI agents need MCP?

Not strictly, but MCP makes it much easier to connect agents to many tools in a consistent, reusable way.
